Being a therapist is a very rewarding job. Having a deep respect for people’s stories, I am forever curious about how things have developed for them, how their experiences have shaped their lives, what behaviours they have learned from their caregivers and how their own path has either guided them or led them astray.
If someone were to ask me what the most rewarding part of my job is, I would most likely be tempted to say something that would be expected from a therapist; something along the lines of the deep meaning I get from walking beside a person, even for a short time, in their journey of healing. And that would be true; except for me, that is a privilege. I am forever grateful to my clients who trust me to hold some space in their growth.
That aside, perhaps one of the most rewarding parts of my job is when I hear someone say “Hmmm, I never thought of it that way.” To me, that is a sign that through curiousity – through being open to exploration, we have found together, a new perspective, a new understanding. It is often through a different field of view that we feel brave enough to make a change and to challenge our old ways of thinking in order to bring about some movement and growth.
It is often all about perspective 🙂
